How Long Does it take to make a dance costume?

Making costumes is never straight forward every pattern and every customer is different but there are 4 main parts to making a dance costume:

  • Pattern Making

  • Cutting

  • Sewing

  • Decorating

All 4 of these things take time and the time it takes depends on various aspects of each costume.

If there is and existing pattern then that will take a significantly less amount of time then if a pattern has to be made from scratch. This will also be one of the things that impacts cutting patterns too.

Cutting will not only take longer if a new pattern is needed but also it depends on the type of pattern and if there is a lot of smaller pieces to be cut. cutting times can vary as a result.

When it comes to the sewing the time can take anywhere from 15 Minutes to 5 or 6 hours depending on the complexity of the costume as well as factoring in that sometimes machines can break down and need fixing as well.

Decorating is not something that is needed on all costumes - a good fabric or an interesting cut can be all that is needed. I have made costumes with over 5000+ stones and 30+ pieces of lace. Those costumes took over 15 hours just to decorate.

The short answer to how long do costumes take to make is anywhere between 30 minutes for a basic costume (with everything pre cut and ready to go) to over 30 hour for thousands of stones and hand sewn embellishments.

The time frame for every costume is different depending on style and embellishments but these are the four main factors into how long it takes to make a costume. examples of both types of costumes are attached below.
